Factory Worker Receives N25 Million Payout After Losing Arm in Moulding Machine Accident

Lagos factory worker industrial plant accident

A grim reminder of the persistent dangers lurking on Nigerian factory floors has surfaced in Lagos, where a worker who lost his right arm in a workplace accident has finally received N25 million in compensation more than a year after the incident left him permanently maimed.

The worker, identified as Joshua Shapara, was employed at Anjia Prefabrication Limited, a manufacturing outfit operating within Lagos State. According to information made available by the Lagos State Safety Commission, the accident occurred in 2024 while Shapara was carrying out his duties in the moulding section of the plant. The injuries sustained were so severe that surgeons had no option but to amputate his right arm.

For Shapara, the payout while significant by local standards cannot undo the life-altering consequences of that single day on the job.

Following the accident, the matter was escalated to the Lagos State Safety Commission, the regulatory body charged with enforcing occupational safety standards across the state.

After conducting its review, the commission confirmed that Anjia Prefabrication Limited had paid the agreed N25 million in compensation to the victim.

The commission pointed to gaps in workplace safety culture, noting that proper precautions could have spared Shapara arm and the company a costly legal and reputational fallout.

The Lagos State Safety Commission has indicated that it will continue to push for stricter compliance across the state's industrial sector. Whether that translates into more frequent inspections, public naming of erring firms, or stronger penalties remains to be seen.

For Joshua Shapara, the road ahead will be defined by adjustment to a body that no longer functions as it once did, and to a future shaped by an accident that, by the regulator's own admission, should never have happened.

This report is based on information released by the Lagos State Safety Commission regarding workplace incidents in Lagos State.
